As a Docent, you will embark on a journey of continuous learning, expanding your expertise while honing both professional and personal skills. Your role is essential in enriching the visitor experience, transforming a simple day at the Zoo into an unforgettable one. Whether greeting guests, assisting with day planning, leading guided Walking Tours, or driving Zebra Car Tours, every interaction enhances public understanding of wildlife and conservation. You will learn the art of “edu-tainment”— that’s the combination of education and entertainment to inspire and engage visitors.
To ensure Docents are knowledgeable across a broad range of topics, regular in-house training is essential.
PZDA Orientation Day
If you’re curious or have questions, the Perth Zoo Docent Association (PZDA) hosts a two-hour information session annually at Perth Zoo. This session provides insights into the role of Docents and their duties, along with a 45-minute guided tour led by a current Docent.
The next ‘Orientation Day’ will be held in the Perth Zoo Lecture Theatre on Saturday 18 April 2026 (arrive at 9.45 am for 10.00 am start).

Is This Role Right for You?
This position is ideal for individuals who share a deep love for wildlife and conservation and have a genuine enthusiasm for connecting with people. If you are passionate about making a difference, becoming a Docent allows you to contribute meaningfully to conservation while inspiring others.
Selection Criteria
Docents are selected for their people skills, enthusiasm, and reliability. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of two days per month and maintain a good level of physical fitness, as the role involves extensive walking throughout the Zoo while assisting visitors.
Training Course Details
The initial Perth Zoo Docent Training Course equips volunteers with the necessary communication skills and expertise to lead both walking and driving tours while engaging with visitors.
💰 Course Fee: $140 (payment required in full by week two of training)
